My name is Allison and I’m a 34 year old who’s been battling mild adult acne for over four years. I started this blog because when I first experienced acne at age 29, I couldn’t find a personal space online on the topic of adult acne. No one was writing about their experience and I craved to connect to someone especially since my friends and family have immaculate skin. I felt alone. It was a horrifying experience because I managed to live 29 years and barely get a blemish and then all of a sudden cystic acne was popping up on my cheeks faster than I could say “why me?” Moreover, I was in the process of planning a wedding. I didn’t want to walk down the aisle with acne scars and inflammation. Fortunately, the week of my wedding I didn’t experience a single break-out. Especially thanks to Proactiv+ which is what I was using for ten months leading up to the big day.
Full disclosure, I am not a dermatologist or a beauty expert. I am just a girl experiencing the challenge of adult acne while navigating my career and personal life. So, why do I have adult acne? It’s strongly tied to dairy products. My body can’t process the hormones in dairy so it’s only way to “process” is through painful and scar-inducing cystic acne on my cheeks. Not fun.
I have been thinking about building this blog for a long time but I didn’t have the confidence because exposing my adult acne seemed daunting and I sometimes have issues with taking photos or selfies (oh hi! scars and inflammation). Nevertheless, what finally inspired me is that this is not just about me, it’s about all those battling adult acne. This is a place for you. My goal for The Beauty Blot is to create a sense of community, share beauty and lifestyle tips, ideas and a peek into my life.
